Anime to Watch in September!(+reviews)

Hello everyone! I’m back with another post! This blog has been mostly kpop in terms of personal interests thus far, so I thought I’d switch it up and aim for a different audience with a post about anime! I started watching my first ever anime, My Little Monster, back in 2016 or so. Looking back now, it wasn’t really to my taste. The characters were a bit funky, which I understand is what makes it appealing to some people, but in general I was kind of uncomfortable with some of the things they did, haha! But don’t worry, there isn’t any sexual content. It’s just that the male lead is sort of rude and at times a bit irritating. Anyways, “how i got into anime” is a story for another time. Today, I’m sharing a list of anime that I have either watched in the past month, am currently watching, or plan to watch this month! I hope some of you might find this helpful!

Please note that, as always, my list is not in any particular order(except for the first anime). If you would like to see a ranked list, please let me know in the comments and I will try to come up with that!

  1. Kaichou wa maid sama!

This is my all time favorite anime! So far, I haven’t quiitteeee found one that tops this. When I first started watching anime, I only watched shoujo anime, understandably. I came across Maid sama when I was searching for anime similar to My Little Monster. It’s not exactly similar, but it falls in the same genre. The story centers around a girl named Ayuzawa Misaki, whose father abandoned her, her mother, and her younger sister, leaving them a debt. Her being poor doesn’t actually play that big a part in the story, as they weren’t in extreme poverty or anything like that. But, it does lead to her attending a school with a low tuition, where she meets the male lead Usui Takumi. She is a strict, powerful, and diligent student council president, while Usui is your typical popular guy who is somehow good at everything. The anime focuses on developing their relationship, but it’s more of a slice-of-life, where each episode doesn’t necessarily lead to the next one, but are in chronological order. Although Usui’s character might be considered a bit clichΓ©, I personally think that Misaki is quite unique, at least among all the anime I’ve watched so far. There’s a lot of comedy in this one too, so I hope some of you guys will enjoy it!

Also, the anime does not cover the full manga, but the rest of the story doesn’t really have any conflicts, it’s just smooth sailing. πŸ˜‰

2. Haikyu!!

This one’s a classic. I started watching it because one of my favorite youtubers(cafe.studyy) showed it quite a bit in her vlogs, and I’ve also been seeing a lot about it online. Needless to say, it didn’t disappoint me! So far I’ve only finished the first season, but it was very compelling. This is a sports anime about volleyball, and the “main character team” is Karasuno. The anime kicks off with a boy named Shouyo Hinata. His dream is to become like “the small giant” a legendary volleyball player who, despite his height, was able to perform spectacularly on the court. Hinata is very physically talented, and once he goes to high school, he ends up on the same team with one of his gifted opponents from a match in middle school, which he and his amateur team lost miserably. I’d like to note that the anime itself doesn’t actually contain romance, it’s just the fandom that makes ships between the characters. I highly recommend this anime! It’s very inspiring, and I actually felt more motivated to play tennis after watching it. πŸ™‚ Although I can’t play anymore now that we are in lockdown. 😦

3. Given

First off, this one is SAD. Like SADDDD SAD. Mafuyu Sato is a quiet, introverted boy who owns a guitar but doesn’t know anything about it. When Uenoyama Ritsuka finds him by chance sleeping on the stair hugging a guitar with rusty strings, a long chain of miraculous events kick starts. Uenoyama is part of a band, albeit without a vocalist. But when he hears Mafuyu sing, he is immediately drawn in, and he ends up joining the band. From there, you are in for an emotional ride! I don’t want to spoil it, but Mafuyu does have a rather grim past. Unfortunately the anime only has one season, which covers around up to chapter 14 of the manga; it has many more episodes. If you really like the story(like me), I recommend you to read the manga! However, the websites it is translated on may be a bit sketchy. Your safest bet would be to go ahead and buy it, but for broke people like me, online is the best we can do 😦 (but please stay safe on the internet!).

4. The World is Still Beautiful

From what I’ve seen, this anime isn’t really that popular as compared to a couple of the others I’ve mentioned. However, the story is super unique! I haven’t actually finished this one yet because I got distracted with others :p , but essentially it’s a love story between a princess who can sing to call for rain, Nike, and a young king of the sun kingdom(younger than her). First, I think it’s unique just because the male lead is younger, which you don’t often see in anime. The anime never explicitly states his age, but if I had to guess I’d say younger than 15, judging by how the creators drew him(his height, face, etc.). He has a rather sad past, seeing that he was forced to rule at such a young age, and is slightly tyrannical and mean. But Nike changes something in him, and this anime is basically about how their relationship develops through several struggles. This one has comedy too, so I think a lot of you will enjoy it!

5. Gakuen Babysitters

This one is just PURE FLUFF. Need I say more?

The story is about how a boy named Ryu and his baby brother Kotaro. Their parents died in a plane crash, and an old school master invites him to live with her; her son and his wife died in the same crash. However, her reason for taking him in was so that he could take care of the children of teachers in the babysitting center! The story is essentially a slice-of-life about Ryu, Kotaro, the other children, and their families. It’s a really heartwarming, light-spirited one, so it would be great for those of you who just want to sit down and watch something that doesn’t require much thought about the plot. There are only 13 episodes; I finished it in less than a week!

6. Lovely Complex

I started watching this a long time ago, and although I haven’t finished it, I know how it ends because of all the clips I watched (lol). It’s a simple love story about a super tall girl, Risa, and a short boy, Otani. At first they hate each other, and everybody calls them a comedy duo, but eventually their relationship amounts to more than that. Personally, I kind of like being short, so I can understand the struggle Risa would have been going through. On the other hand, it’s pretty hard to look manly and tough when most people can only see the top of your head(LOL). Of course, that’s not to say that Risa didn’t act like a girl, or that Otani wasn’t manly. They were each cool and kind in their own ways, and the best part is that they don’t care that the other isn’t your standard kind of attractive person(I’m referring to the “beauty standards” in anime, I don’t mean to offend anyone in real life!). This is a pretty unique anime, and there aren’t any dark pasts or anything like that, so it’s also pretty good for just sitting back and watching a funny love story unroll.

7. Fairy Tail

This one is pretty popular, and it’s an action anime about a wizard guild called Fairy Tail and how they develop friendships, right wrongs, and generally go on a ton of adventures. It is a very long anime with 227 episodes, but I think once you start watching it, it will go by quickly. I have previously watched up until around episode 20, but because that was quite a long time ago I am restarting. There isn’t particularly any romance(so far), and it is mostly just action and comedy. I especially think the animation is well done for this anime, specifically the scenes where they use magic. The structure of the anime is like Kaichou wa maid sama, where the episodes happen in chronological order but don’t technically directly connect from one to another. I would recommend this for people who are looking for a long anime to really get into.

8. Yona of the Dawn

I have finished watching this anime, but it was over a year ago, and I really don’t remember what happened other than there being dragons, a girl with pink hair, and Hak(lmao). But I do remember that I really liked it, because my username for some things was Yonaandhak for a while. It is a sort of slow-burn romance, and there is also a lot of action in this one. I usually get uncomfortable when the female lead acts pampered and a bit bratty, but because there was a lot of character development in this anime, I came to overlook that. That’s not to say that I didn’t get uncomfortable, though. This is your average length anime with 24 episodes, and it is a bit like a historical/fantasy anime, which is right up my alley. πŸ™‚

9. Ao Haru Ride

I haven’t technically finished this one, but because I already know how it ends I didn’t really feel like I had to ;-; . I’m considering finishing it up, but there are just so many animes to watch that I don’t think I will. It’s a very simple and sweet shoujo anime about two childhood friends who are completely different when they meet again. I don’t know why, but it’s really aesthetically pleasing for me to watch anime with a female lead that has long brown hair, so I kind of jumped in excitement when I saw a picture of this one. This time, I found it while looking for anime similar to Kaichou wa maid sama, and although it is in the same genre, once again it’s not very similar. The male lead, Kou, is rather subdued and doesn’t really do anything provoking. The female lead, Futaba, has a bubbly personality, but doesn’t really have any friends. Kou changes her perspective on what a real friend is. From there, as you can imagine, there is a lot of confusion, flirting, and drama between them and their friends. This is a short anime, so I think it would be good for a small break for some of you guys who mainly watch action or fighting anime.

10. Nijiro Days

Now this anime…this is just something I would watch over and over again. It’s probably my favorite slice of life anime. The story sort of revolves around four best friends and their respective love interests. I would say the main couple is Natsuki and Anna, though. There is a tiny bit of sexual reference in it, but nothing is actually showed or talked about in detail, so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. This one is actually not on Crunchyroll, but you can find the whole thing(full screen too!) on YouTube. There isn’t all that much character development or a deep plot, so I don’t have much else to say, but it is definitely worth watching!

These are the animes that I am planning to watch this month! Since I haven’t watched them yet, I can’t give my opinion, but they all look really good and action-packed! I used to stay away from action anime because I tend to get really sucked into the plot and get pretty much completely unproductive, but the temptation was too strong TwT.

11. Demon Slayer

12. Black Clover

13. Yuri!!! on ICE

I actually watched a ton of clips from this so I understand the general plot, but I haven’t watched the actual anime.

14. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

15. Spiritpact

I hope everyone found something in this post that interests them; I do watch quite a large variety of anime, if I say so myself. In case anyone was wondering, I use the app Crunchyroll as well as the website to watch anime. Also, just a little tip that the website does not have any ads in the episode, only the app does! I have compiled a watchlist of all the anime I have watched or want to watch, and there are many more not on this list. If anyone is interested, please let me know in the comments, and I will work on a part two!! Thanks for reading!
